Lessons Learned and Challenges of Biopesticide Usage for Locust Management—The Case of China

Using qualitative methods, this study assessed the stakeholders and management processes involved in locust outbreaks China, including factors influencing use of biopesticides. Study findings show that China has an integrated national response protocol, which involves various institutions from all administrative levels government. The process is inherently highly complex but efficient, with multisectoral agencies working closely together to prevent and/or manage outbreaks. In addition, been successful combating recent outbreaks, due dedicated government funding, decisive technical actions, empowerment local administration. This case county level acting as a ‘first-responder’ capacitated financially technically respond invasion their jurisdiction. Additionally, despite availability biopesticides markets, dampened by inadequate information about market availability, negative perceptions decision makers efficacy, concerns costs, well limited knowledge application techniques. Actions are therefore needed relevant authorities enhance stakeholder awareness biopesticide field processes. Future areas research should focus on modelling expected impact cost effectiveness chemicals vs. biopesticides, thus increasing evidence base for promoting use.
